What I do at work
Sunday, May. 09, 2004, 6:26 P.M.

A lot of people ask me what it's like to be a night shift CNA. I thought that I would put on here what a typical night for me is like

My Typical Night at Work

9:45- Arrive at work, talk to the previous shift about what has been going on

10:00-10:20 Get report from the nurse from the previous shift

10:30-10:45 Make up cart with linens, adult breifs, lotions, soap, toothbrushes, creams for certain people. Set up garbage can and soiled linen cart

10:45-11:00 put people to bed that aren't in bed and want to go to bed

11:00-11:45 First Rounds. Check to see if people are wet, and reposition people. Do range of motion on certain people

11:45-12:30 Do restorative care books and fill out 24 hour report sheets with intakes and output

12:30-12:40 Break

1:00-1:30 Second Rounds, repositioning people again

1:30-2:30 Straighten rooms, answer call bells, spray lysol in hall and in garbage carts so it smells fresh

2:30-2:45 Clean dentures

2:45-3:00 Make sure everyone has a drink, give drinks to people in my hall who can't drink by themselves

3:00-3:40 Third rounds, repositioning people again

3:40-3:50 Break

4:00-4:30 Shower resident #1, who usually wants up at this time

4:30-4:45 Get resident #2 up and showered

4:45-5:00 Give res. #3 a bath and make sure nurse does trach. care on res.

5:00-5:15 Put res. #4 in bathroom to start getting ready for the day

5:15-5:30 Tell charge nurse anything that she needs to know to tell shift coming on

5:30-5:50 Last rounds, repositioning, help day shift CNA get one of her residents on the bedside commode

5:50-6:00 Rounds with day shift

6:00am- leave

Along with all that, I usually have one or two people crying or screaming and bells ringing. But that's the jist of it.
