What I do at work A lot of people ask me what it's like to be a night shift CNA. I thought that I would put on here what a typical night for me is like 9:45- Arrive at work, talk to the previous shift about what has been going on 10:00-10:20 Get report from the nurse from the previous shift 10:30-10:45 Make up cart with linens, adult breifs, lotions, soap, toothbrushes, creams for certain people. Set up garbage can and soiled linen cart 10:45-11:00 put people to bed that aren't in bed and want to go to bed 11:00-11:45 First Rounds. Check to see if people are wet, and reposition people. Do range of motion on certain people 11:45-12:30 Do restorative care books and fill out 24 hour report sheets with intakes and output 12:30-12:40 Break 1:00-1:30 Second Rounds, repositioning people again 1:30-2:30 Straighten rooms, answer call bells, spray lysol in hall and in garbage carts so it smells fresh 2:30-2:45 Clean dentures 2:45-3:00 Make sure everyone has a drink, give drinks to people in my hall who can't drink by themselves 3:00-3:40 Third rounds, repositioning people again 3:40-3:50 Break 4:00-4:30 Shower resident #1, who usually wants up at this time 4:30-4:45 Get resident #2 up and showered 4:45-5:00 Give res. #3 a bath and make sure nurse does trach. care on res. 5:00-5:15 Put res. #4 in bathroom to start getting ready for the day 5:15-5:30 Tell charge nurse anything that she needs to know to tell shift coming on 5:30-5:50 Last rounds, repositioning, help day shift CNA get one of her residents on the bedside commode 5:50-6:00 Rounds with day shift 6:00am- leave Along with all that, I usually have one or two people crying or screaming and bells ringing. But that's the jist of it. |
